Agony and Ecstasy (short story)

The shrill sound of the alarm woke, John from deep sleep. The work pressures kept him from sleep lately. June, his wife of two years slept peacefully next to him, oblivious of the loud alarm.

The incessant rain, brought the traffic to a chaotic standstill. John was listening to the radio, which was giving information about the traffic on different parts of the city. He was wondering, how does it help if all the roads are blocked with traffic.

The meeting with the new boss was routine, nothing spectacular emerged out of it. The plans for expansion were tabled a week back, but nothing was moving lately. Added to that, the unrest in the factory by labourers slowed down the production. The new boss, Samir Malhotra had just taken charge and was just getting to know the Indian way of working, having just returned from his foreign sojourn.

John was thoughtful, coming back to his work station. He was upset that the project was taking time in getting the approval from the bosses. He was helpless and had to just play the waiting game.

Lunch time, came and went.John was busy giving finishing touches to the financials of the project, which was getting altered, on a day to day basis, with the stock market playing havoc in the prices of raw materials and other related things. He was praying fervently for the take off of his pet project.

Gods seem to have heard the heartfelt prayers of John, for 4 PM saw the meeting being convened again, and this time, a beaming John came out of the board room, and everyone around the office clapped for him encouraging him for the project take off, which was very vital for all of them as well, as it concerned progress for the company on the whole.

He was whistling his favourite tune as he entered the elevator. June was surprised to see the happy face of her husband as he entered the flat.He slept peacefully that night and was up even before the alarm.

The earth shattering sound of some crash came from somewhere up. The earth was shaking, and the furniture inside the office was moving from one end to the other in the impact of the earthquake. The first thought in the minds of the people around were to run for safety. John, was different. He wanted to help the people before he saved his life.
He helped all the ladies and the older staff to get out of the office building. He was the last one to leave the building.

The loss due to Earthquake was phenomenal to the company. Although there was no loss of life, the setback to the company had a negative impact on the new expansion project. John's dream of going ahead with the dream of heading the expansion project thus suffered a sad setback.

What must have happened to poor john?

He is a changed man now, having seen death so close. He realised that there is no point in getting workedup about things beyond one's control.Life teaches lessons, and one learns skills of living from it. When one is thus ready to face the uncertain world with the skills thus learnt, life springs surprises.

John today received a mail from his overseas office, giving him permission for the project, to be started in a different place. His happiness knew no bounds, but this time,he took things calmly.

Driving back John was humming his favourite tune, dreaming about his future armed with, confidence and perseverence and love for work, as his ammunition.

America, here I come!!!!!!!!!said he.
